So, what’s it like to listen to? ‘PUSHY’ is 33-minutes long, and is possibly the most experimental sounding release in Lithuania at present. It’s also a break from Sheep Got Waxed’s past, in that this album follows the formula of being more “played” rather than “produced”. However, Sheep Got Waxed fans need not worry that the band has lost its trademark “loose” sound, as the characteristic shooting guitars, drums, and saxophones are ever present, but this time, they’re accompanied by a bigger, heavier, backdrop of electronic sounds.
And while Sheep Got Waxed define themselves as jazz musicians, that’s like saying David Bowie was only glam rock. Throughout “PUSHY”, they juggle different genres, meaning as soon as they hook on a traditional jazz sound, they then flip to punk, and when things take a slower, more acoustic tone, the threesome bring in those much promised electronic elements.
The opener, ‘Woolless‘ is the album’s standout track, and with loose guitars and the saxophone setting each other up to create an energetic chorus, it becomes a dance-like number, which wouldn’t sound out of place being played in a club.
However, Sheep Got Waxed take the most pride in Forro, a track that’s set to a music video by Mikas Žukauskas. The video was funded by their gig at Peronas in Vilnius, and its turnout so huge, that the audience had to go and sit on the (disused!) railway tracks opposite the venue.
While “PUSHY” switches between the intense and the relaxed, and sounds different to Sheep Got Waxed’s debut album, it doesn’t take anything away from their signature sound. It’s exciting, it’s brave, and that’s what characterises Sheep Got Waxed.
